Lovisa Cheung is an educator, researcher and physical therapist whose work is informed by her lived experience as an East Asian scholar who grew up in Scarborough, Ontario.

Lovisa completed a BSc in Kinesiology at McMaster University, MSc in Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto, PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at U of T, and CIHR-funded postdoctoral fellowship in Rehabilitation Sciences at McMaster University.

Her research in movement-based therapies (e.g., sport, physical activity, rehabilitation) for people aging with complex neurological conditions continues to support her clinical practice and evidence-informed teaching. Lovisa's education scholarship involves examining compassionate care in the digital environment and facilitating patient engagement in research.

Research & Scholarly Activities

The overarching aim of Lovisa's research is to develop, deliver and/or evaluate movement-based therapies that enhance the health of individuals aging with complex neurological conditions such as spinal cord injury and stroke.

Specifically, Lovisa has a special interest in (1) developing solutions to optimize participation and (2) examining how rehabilitation and physical activity can be inclusive of the lifespan of people living with complex neurological conditions.

To ensure her work remains clinically meaningful, Lovisa uses an Integrated Knowledge Translation partnership approach to engage people with lived experience alongside clinicians, researchers, trainees and other collaborators throughout the research process.
