Euson Yeung

The Department of Physical Therapy is thrilled to share that Euson Yeung has been promoted to Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, with continuing status and Jay Shaw has been promoted to Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2025. These well-deserved promotions reflect their outstanding contributions to our academic community and dedication to advancing health professions through innovative research and education.

Yeung has been an active member of the department since 2004 and joined our Teaching Stream faculty in 2019.  Throughout this time, Yeung has made significant contributions to the department, the university and the broader field of health professions education.

With over 29 years of experience in orthopaedic practice, Yeung brings a wealth of clinical expertise to his teaching, education scholarship/research and leadership roles.  Yeung has coordinated and taught in the advanced orthopaedic curriculum within the Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) program. More recently, Yeung has spearheaded the implementation and evaluation of enrolment expansion in the MScPT program.

Yeung has received several notable awards and recognition for his teaching excellence, including the Carol Kennedy Teaching Excellence Award (2024) from the National Orthopaedic Division, Canadian Physiotherapy Association and the Centenary Medal of Distinction, Canadian Physiotherapy Association (2021).

Yeung’s education scholarship and research focuses on pedagogy in physical therapy and health care. Yeung held a competitive teaching fellowship at the University of Toronto (2022-2024) which focused on building capacity and conducting pedagogical research. Since Yeung’s appointment, he has received three funded grants, with two as principal investigator. His research program centers on advancing student-centered teaching and learning practices in physical therapy education by improving student assessments, fostering learner agency and developing educational programs that reflect the core values of the profession and institution. By aligning pedagogy with these principles, his work seeks to create transformative learning experiences that empower students while advancing the science of physical therapy education. Yeung’s passion for teaching is evident in his classroom, where he encourages students to be creative and more critical in the way they think and consider multiple perspectives.

Jay Shaw

Shaw joined our department in 2021 and holds a cross-appointment to the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation where he supervises research-focused graduate students. He serves as Research Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ethics & Health at the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics and is an adjunct scientist at the Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care.

Shaw also holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Responsible Health Innovation, aiming to improve community-based health and rehabilitation care for marginalized communities by generating and refining socially responsible approaches to health innovation.

Shaw’s program of research addresses the implementation and ethical implications of innovations in health care, with a special focus on innovative models of community-focused integrated care, digital health technologies, and applications of AI in health care. His research leverages qualitative social science approaches and draws on theory from organization studies and science & technology studies. He partners closely with community members and health system stakeholders to ensure his research is practically relevant, and his work informs the ethical design of health system innovations that advance social justice in aging, public health and health care.

Congratulations Profs. Yeung and Shaw on this well-deserved achievement! Their dedication to advancing education and research in the health professions makes them both invaluable assets to our department, university and broader community.
