Notable Alumni: Virginia Wright

Dr. Virginia Wright is recognized within Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, across Canada as well as internationally as an outstanding leader and scientist in paediatric rehabilitation.  Virginia has many qualities that make her stand out as a physiotherapy leader in paediatric research and they include her passion for mentorship, her innovative ideas, her collaborative work ethic and her energetic drive to improve the lives of children with disabilities.  She has been a full-time researcher at Holland Bloorview for 16 years, and during that time, has always maintained a close association with her physiotherapy colleagues, teaching, encouraging, listening to and supporting them in their professional practice.

Virginia graduated with a BScPT from the University of Toronto, then began her career working in the field of paediatrics, first at the Hospital for Sick Children and then Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital where she quickly distinguished herself as a strong, collaborative clinician.  She developed a keen interest in learning more about outcome measurement in order to provide the best care for her clients, which led her to return to school where she completed a Master’s in Measurement and Evaluation in 1988 and a PhD in Health Research Methodology in 2005. As a result of her drive and passion to enhance her learning and her generosity in sharing knowledge, Virginia has influenced several generations of physiotherapists and continues to do so locally, nationally and internationally.

Virginia is recognized as both an outstanding researcher and educator.  She currently holds the Bloorview Children’s Hospital Foundation Chair in Paediatric Rehabilitation (2012-2017).  One of the reasons Virginia’s research is so valued by clinicians is that it has direct clinical relevance.  In her “spare time”, Virginia sings in a number of choirs and enjoys taking her dog Murphy, for long walks.
