Dr. Dina Brooks Speaks at Symposium on Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy in Brazil

Department of Physical Therapy Professor Dr. Brooks presents at the 30th Annual International Symposium on Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy and Physiotherapy in Intensive Care.

June 8-11, 2016, Dr. Brooks spoke to 2000 attendees about assessment and prescription in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Her talk titled Functional Walk Tests in COPD: What is the Evidence? discussed exercise tests that require simple equipment and can be performed in a variety of physical therapy settings. Dr. Brooks explained how to perform these tests with safety and precaution, and how to interpret results into treatment plans.

Dr. Brook’s second presentation addressed balance in COPD, a relatively new realm of research. Her discussion emphasized the severity of balance deficit in this patient population, how to properly assess balance, and how to prescribe balance exercises.

Dr. Brooks presenting on stage in Brazil“I had the opportunity to partake in many interesting discussions with cardiorespiratory physiotherapists from around the world” says Dr. Brooks. “I enjoyed sharing my perspective as a Canadian physiotherapist, and my research on ways we can help patients with lung disease.”

Between sharing her innovations in COPD research and learning from other renowned physiotherapy researchers, Dina enjoyed the Brazilian culture, local food and hot sun!
