Physical Therapy Speaker Series - Dr. Katie Mah

Physical Therapy Speaker Series

Friday, February 3, 2023 from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m.

Presenter:  Dr. Katie Mah

Topic: “Promoting equity and flourishing for youth with ‘invisible’ impairments: A program of critical rehabilitation research”

Dr. Katie Mah is a critical rehabilitation researcher with a background in occupational therapy and nursing. Her program of research investigates the disability experiences of youth with ‘invisible’ impairments with the ultimate goal of promoting equity and flourishing for this group. Much of her research has been in the substantive area of youth concussion with recent expansion into investigations of youth chronic pain. Dr. Mah is a Mitacs Postdoctoral Fellow in the CRED (Childhood Rehabilitation Ethics & Disability) Lab at Western University and the NOvEL (Neurorehab Outcomes via Education & Learning) Lab at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. She is also a trainee with VOICE (Views on Interdisciplinary Childhood Ethics) at McGill University. Her doctoral work employed critical arts-based methods to explore how concussion is discursively understood by young people. For this work, she was awarded an international Pursuit Award by the Bloorview Research Institute (Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital) and the Joan Eakin Award for Methodological Excellence in a Qualitative Dissertation by the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research (University of Toronto). Building on this early research, her postdoctoral work explores how youth concussion ‘recovery’ is conceptualized and acted upon in rehabilitation.
