Planning to adapt – flexibility in lesson design using the 5E’s
Tuesday, June 11, 2019 from 1:00-3:00, Room 150, 500 University Avenue
The renewed MScPT curriculum emphasizes student-centred learning through its curriculum vision, central pillars, and teaching and learning philosophy. Implementing this approach is often easier said than done! This workshop offers an opportunity for participants to refresh their approach to class planning with the 5 Es: both a model of how learning works, and an adaptable framework for lesson design. Participants will explore the 5 E’s – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate – as phases of learning that can help us both structure tutorials and guide students in learning new content. This model of lesson design is flexible, focused on student learning, and has its origins in science education. Participants will experience each of the five phases as we explore the theory behind this model of instructional design, identify relevant applications, and draft a plan for applying this approach in your own teaching context. Fostering critical reflexivity – what’s so critical about reflexivity? (Dr. Roger Kerry)

In the new MScPT curriculum, the critical thinking pillar is one of several ways in which we cultivate a teaching and learning environment that enables students to embrace complexity, to deal with uncertainty, and to develop and practice resilience and persistence. A key component of critical thinking is critical reflexivity, which we have defined as a process that analyzes taken-for-granted aspects of physical therapy practice through examining one’s own values, beliefs, perspectives and social traditions. In this workshop, participants will learn about the principles of critical reflexivity and how this translates into your teaching practice, whether this is in the classroom or in the clinical setting. Participants will experience specific teaching approaches as we explore multiple strategies to motivate, teach, and support students to engage in reflexive practice.
